🐻 Celebrating 99 Years of Winnie the Pooh

October 14, 2025

This week, we’re celebrating one of the most beloved friends in literary history — Winnie the Pooh! It’s hard to believe it’s been 99 years since A.A. Milne’s classic first invited us into the Hundred Acre Wood. There’s something magical about revisiting these stories as an adult, and of course, sharing them with young readers today.

📚 The Classic Pooh Collection

A.A. Milne's timeless tales have enchanted readers for nearly a century. Here's a look at the four primary books that introduced us to the whimsical world of Pooh and his friends:

  • When We Were Very Young (1924)
A delightful collection of poems that introduced readers to Christopher Robin and his adventures. The poem "Teddy Bear" within this book marks the first appearance of the bear who would become Winnie the Pooh.
  • Winnie the Pooh (1926)
The first full-length collection of Pooh stories, introducing Winnie, Christopher Robin, and the Hundred Acre Wood gang. Originally published by Methuen, with illustrations by E.H. Shepard, this book has become a cherished classic.
  • Now We Are Six (1927)
A follow-up poetry collection that continues the adventures of Christopher Robin, exploring themes of childhood and imagination.
  • The House at Pooh Corner (1928)
The second full-length collection of Pooh stories, featuring new characters and adventures. This book delves deeper into the friendships and adventures of Pooh and his friends.

🎨 Fun Facts:

Christopher Robin's bear was originally named Edward but after visiting the London Zoo and Winnie (a bear at the zoo), he changed his stuffed bear's name to Winnie.

While the original illustrations by E.H. Shepard were in black and white, the first edition with color illustrations wasn’t published until 1974 by Dutton Children's Books. This edition featured Shepard's original illustrations with added color, bringing a new vibrancy to the beloved tales.

🧠 Why These Books Matter for Young Readers

  • Encourage imaginative play and storytelling
The whimsical adventures of Pooh and his friends inspire creativity and imaginative play.
  • Perfect for read-aloud sessions
These stories are ideal for read-aloud sessions, fostering a love for literature in young readers. The poetry found in When We Were Very Young and Now We are Six is whimsical and memorable – making them instant favorites.  I still remember memorizing Jonathan Joe (found in When We Were Very Young) as a child.  And it still brings a smile to my face every time I read it again or recite it to my grandchildren.
  • Explore themes of friendship and kindness
These books highlight the importance of friendship, kindness, and understanding.

🧸 Looking Ahead: The 100-Year Anniversary

As Winnie-the-Pooh approaches his 100th birthday in 2026, exciting plans are already in motion to celebrate this beloved bear and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood.

Farshore (an imprint of HarperCollins) has announced a series of centenary celebrations that will include:

  • New hardcover and paperback editions of A.A. Milne’s original stories and poems, featuring fresh designs by award-winning illustrator Micaela Alcaino.
  • The release of A Little Boy and His Bear in October 2026 — a brand-new, authorized sequel written by Jane Riordan and illustrated by Andrew Grey.
  • A traveling exhibition and book trail in partnership with the National Trust, showcasing archive materials from the Milne and Shepard estates, the University of Surrey, and the HarperCollins archive.
  • Collaborations with the Scottish Book Trust for its 2025–2026 Christmas Appeal, featuring classic Winnie-the-Pooh artwork.
  • Nationwide (England) school programs encouraging children to create birthday cards for Pooh, to be displayed in an anniversary exhibition in 2026.

These centenary celebrations promise to honor both the enduring charm of Milne’s stories and the artistry of E.H. Shepard’s illustrations — reminding us all why the “bear of very little brain” has remained in our hearts for nearly a century.

🍯 A Timeless Friendship

For nearly a century, A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh stories have filled hearts with wonder, friendship, and imagination. From the poetry of When We Were Very Young to the adventures in The House at Pooh Corner, these timeless tales continue to charm readers of every generation. As Pooh’s 100th anniversary approaches, there’s no better time to revisit the Hundred Acre Wood and rediscover the simple joys of honey, friendship, and a good story shared together.

Author Spotlight: Janette Oke - Faith, Family, and Frontier Life

June 02, 2025

If you grew up reading sweet, slow-paced stories filled with frontier life, strong faith, and the kind of families that stuck together through it all, chances are you’ve come across a Janette Oke book or two. Her name is nearly synonymous with Christian historical fiction, and for good reason — her gentle storytelling has captivated readers for over four decades.

As I grew older and past The Little House on the Prairie books, my love for historical fiction and frontier life didn’t fade. Image my delight when I first discovered Oke’s books at my grandmother’s church library (shout out to Zion Mennonite Church in Souderton, PA for always having a wonderful library through the years – my dad read through the Hardy Boys as a child thanks to them as well).  After reading the first book – I think it was Once Upon a Summer from the Seasons of the Heart series, I was hooked. My grandmother and parents began to purchase these wonderful books for me for my birthday & holidays, and I also continued to take them out of my grandmother’s church library when I visited. These books have stayed with me all these years and I am now having fun revisiting them again in my 50’s.

A Pioneer in Christian Fiction

Born in Alberta, Canada, Janette Oke grew up surrounded by the prairies - a setting that would later become the backdrop for many of her novels. She published her first book, Love Comes Softly, in 1979, launching not only a bestselling series but also a brand-new genre: Christian historical fiction. That book alone as sold over a million copies as it quickly found a devoted readership.

Oke's writing is marked by a deep faith in God, an emphasis on strong family values, and a love for the simple, meaningful moments of everyday life. Her characters often face hardship and loss, but with each turn of the page, readers are reminded of hope, redemption, and the quiet strength of trusting in something greater than themselves.

Beloved Series by Janette Oke

Janette Oke’s books often center around pioneering families, enduring love, and the quiet moments that make life meaningful. Many of her titles have been turned into television movies and continue to resonate with readers young and old. Here’s a look at the book series she has written.

Love Comes Softly Series:  This is where it all began. Follow Marty and Clark as they build a life together on the frontier. This series spans generations and highlights themes of faith, love, grief, and new beginnings. The series includes the following titles:

  • Love Comes Softly
  • Love’s Enduring Promise
  • Love’s Long Journey
  • Love’s Abiding Joy
  • Love’s Unending Legacy
  • Love’s Unfolding Dream
  • Love Takes Wing
  • Love Finds a Home

Canadian West Series (also known as the “When Calls the Heart” series):  Set in the rugged Canadian frontier, this series follows Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher adjusting to life in a remote mountain town. This was my favorite series of Oke’s growing up – I love the idea of people living in the wilderness/remote areas of the world. This series was adapted into the Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart. The series includes the following titles:

  • When Calls the Heart
  • When Comes the Spring
  • When Breaks the Dawn
  • When Hope Springs New
  • Beyond the Gathering Storm
  • When Tomorrow Comes

Seasons of the Heart Series:  This heartfelt four-book series follows Joshua, a young boy coming of age after the death of his parents, living farm life in the Midwest with his Grandpa, Uncle Charlie and his Aunt Lou. Each book highlights a different season of his life—both literally and figuratively—as he learns lessons about love, loss, belonging, and God's faithful presence. With rich character development, this series is ideal for older children or teens who enjoy stories rooted in faith and personal growth. The series includes the following titles:

  • Once Upon a Summer
  • The Winds of Autumn
  • Winter is Not Forever
  • Spring’s Gentle Promise

Women of the West Series:  This stand-alone series tells the stories of courageous pioneer women facing the challenges of frontier life. Each book introduces a different female protagonist navigating faith, hardship, and heartwarming relationships in the rugged landscapes of the American and Canadian West. These stories showcase resilience, virtue, and the quiet strength of women in history. The series includes the following titles:

  • The Calling of Emily Evans
  • Julia’s Last Hope
  • Roses for Momma
  • A Woman Named Damaris
  • The Measure of a Heart
  • They Called Her Mrs. Doc
  • A Bride for Donnigan
  • Heart of the Wilderness
  • Too Long a Stranger
  • The Bluebird and the Sparrow
  • A Gown of Spanish Lace
  • Drums of Change

Prairie Legacy Books:  A continuation of the Love Comes Softly saga, this series centers around Marty and Clark’s granddaughter, Virginia, as she navigates growing up with questions of faith, purpose, and identity. The series includes the following titles:

  • The Tender Years
  • A Searching Heart
  • A Quiet Strength
  • Like Gold Refined

Other Notable Books:

  • Return to the Canadian West series (co-written with her daughter, Laurel Oke Logan)
  • Song of Acadia series (co-written with T. Davis Bunn)
  • Acts of Faith Books (co-written with T. Davis Bunn)
  • The Pharisee's Wife was released in March of 2025 - at the age of 90, Oke is still writing and publishing books!
  • Oke has also written several other stand-alone books including several children's books

You’ll find a selection of Janette Oke Books ready and waiting in my shop. And if there’s a certain title you’ve been hoping to find, I’d be happy to check my shelves—just email me at info@logcabinvintage.com. Not everything makes it to the website right away.

Why Her Books Still Resonate

Janette Oke’s stories offer more than just entertainment — they’re comfort reads in wonderful, frontier life settings. With themes of faith, perseverance, family, and quiet hope, her books gently remind us of what really matters. They’re ideal for readers who long for stories with depth but without heaviness, where you know the ending will leave you smiling and maybe even a little teary-eyed.

How to Use Janette Oke’s Books in Your Homeschool

Janette Oke’s books aren’t just heartwarming stories — they’re rich with teachable moments and timeless values. Here are a few ideas for weaving them into your homeschool routine:

 1. Read-Alouds for Older Children

While Oke's books are written for an adult audience, many of Janette Oke’s titles are perfect for upper elementary or middle school read-alouds. Try:

  • Reading a chapter a day during morning time or lunch breaks
  • Using the slower pacing to spark discussion about character development, historical context, or moral choices

2. Free Reading for Tweens & Teens

Oke’s writing style is gentle and engaging, with plenty of depth for independent readers. The Love Comes Softly series, or A Prairie Legacy is a great fit for middle school or early high school.

You could assign one as part of a:

  • Character study
  • Historical fiction unit
  • Literature-based Bible study, since many of her books include strong faith-based themes

3. Frontier Life & Historical Context

Pair her stories with living history books or biographies from the same time period — a perfect match for unit studies on:

  • Westward expansion
  • Pioneer life
  • Women’s roles in early settlements

Add in maps, pioneer crafts, or baking a simple frontier recipe for hands-on learning.

4. Values-Based Literature

Themes like forgiveness, perseverance, and trusting God during hard times are woven through all her books. You can use them to:

  • Start conversations about real-life struggles
  • Build emotional literacy and empathy
  • Reinforce family values through storytelling

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re stocking your homeschool shelf with meaningful stories or simply looking for a books or series that feels like a warm hug on a chilly afternoon, Janette Oke delivers. Her books are a gentle reminder that even in the hardest seasons, there is beauty to be found in faith, family, and everyday life.

Author Spotlight: Marguerite de Angeli

October 05, 2022

October's featured author is Marguerite de Angeli.  She has local ties to the area I live in (Eastern PA) & her illustrations get me every time. I thought it would be fun to share a little bit about her & some of the books she has written and illustrated.

Marguerite was born in Michigan in 1889, and her family moved to Philadelphia when she was only 13 years old.  It wasn't until she was married & was living in New Jersey when she really began to hone her skills as an illustrator. Before becoming an author, herself, she illustrated many children's books and was a contributor to The Country Gentleman Magazine.  She was also a singer and soloist in several church choirs in Philadelphia, having left high school to pursue her singing career.

Over her lifetime she wrote and illustrated 27 books. The one that intrigues me the most is The Skippack School in which Christopher Dock is the school master. Anyone in our area of Bucks and Montgomery Counties, PA will recognize the name Christopher Dock as that of the local Mennonite High School. She also wrote about the Amish & addressed racial prejudice in 1946 with the publication of her book Bright April.

She has won countless literary awards and is known as the Grande Dame of Children's Literature.  At the age of 95, she was inducted into Michigan Women's Hall of Fame.  Her awards include:  The Newberry Medal for her book The Door in the Wall (1950) and The Lewis Carroll Shelf Award for Bright April.  She was also a two-time Caldecott Award Nominee.

I always enjoy finding her books when out treasure hunting.  Shop available Marguerite de Angeli children's books for sale in The Marguerite de Angeli Collection.
