Common characteristics include:

Dust jackets with edge wear, small chips, or minor tears - often the dust jackets have been well-loved over the years but do well in protecting the covers and spines of the books.
Possible names, inscriptions, or bookplates inside - usually found on the inside covers or half title pages.
