Few illustrators have captured the gentle beauty of childhood and nature quite like Garth Williams. Best known for his beloved illustrations in Charlotte’s Web, Stuart Little, and the Little House books, Williams also wrote and illustrated several stories of his own. The Rabbit’s Wedding is one of his most charming creations—a quiet woodland tale celebrating love, friendship, and the changing seasons.

First published in 1958, this beautifully illustrated story follows two rabbits, a black rabbit and a white rabbit, who share a peaceful life together in the forest. As they enjoy the simple pleasures of each day, the white rabbit wishes that the black rabbit might stay with her forever. With the gentle help of a wise owl, their wish comes true beneath the full moon as the two rabbits are married in a sweet woodland ceremony.

When the book was first released, it unexpectedly became part of a national conversation. Some critics objected to the story because the two rabbits—one black and one white—marry one another. Published during the early years of the American Civil Rights Movement, the book drew criticism in parts of the country where segregation was still widely enforced.

However, Garth Williams himself explained that the story was never intended as a political statement. Rather, it was simply meant to be a gentle tale about love and companionship in nature. Over time, The Rabbit’s Wedding has come to be appreciated for its warmth, innocence, and the quiet beauty of Williams’ storytelling and illustrations.

Today the book is both a treasured vintage picture book and an interesting reflection of the cultural moment in which it was published.
